At its Dec. 13 meeting, the Los Gatos Union School District Board of Trustees approved extending Superintendent Steve Benbow's medical leave of absence another month. Previously, Benbow was scheduled to be on leave from Nov. 2 through Jan. 2. He now will not be returning until Feb. 2. Assistant Superintendent Steve Peck will continue serving as acting superintendent in the interim.
Fisher Middle School's second Family Math Night will be held in the cafeteria Feb. 8 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The first half hour is set aside for learning and playing the card game cribbage. A variety of math stations--some from the October math night as well as some new ones--will be open from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Parents should complete the RSVP form included in the December/January issue of Fisher Focus and return it to their child's math teacher by Jan. 19.
From now through June 16, Gatito Cleaners at 312 N. Santa Cruz Ave. is donating 10 percent of every bill to the Fisher Home and School Club when customers present the Home and School voucher found in the Fisher Focus. If they do not have a voucher handy, customers should mention that they want the club credited.
Three Leigh High School sophomores took top honors in the 1995-96 essay contest sponsored by the Los Gatos Optimist Club. Maya Hernandez, Christopher Sponseller and Poriya Rohani earned first-, second- and third-place recognition, respectively, and read their essays at the club's breakfast meeting on Jan. 11 at 7 a.m. This year's topic was "Freedom--A Right or a Privilege."
Hernandez's essay will advance to district competition; if she becomes a finalist in the Optimist International essay contest, she will be eligible to share $50,000 in scholarships and prizes. The purpose of the annual contest is to encourage young people to develop awareness of the origins and responsibilities of freedom and to provide them opportunities to improve their written communication skills.
Placement tests for Presentation High School will be administered to all interested eighth-grade girls on two upcoming Saturdays: Jan. 20 and Jan. 27. Test-takers are encouraged to arrive by 8:30 a.m.; testing begins at 9 a.m. Presentation is a San Jose parochial school for girls that admits students of any race, color, national or ethnic origin. Kindergarten registration for Los Gatos Union School District schools begins on Feb. 1. Packets are available at Blossom Hill, Daves Avenue, Lexington and Van Meter elementary schools.
To register a kindergartner, parents must present the school office with a copy of the child's birth certificate, immunization record and tuberculosis skin-test results. When parents turn in a completed registration packet, school secretaries will make an appointment for the child to participate in the district's pre-kindergarten screening clinic in May.
The Humane Education Network of Menlo Park is holding its sixth annual "A Voice for Animals" essay contest, which is open to all high-school students.
Monetary prizes will be awarded for the three essays that best promote the humane treatment and understanding of animals in the United States.
