Fred Callis
Longtime Los Gatan Fred C. Callis died Dec. 14 at the age of 91.
Callis was born Dec. 12, 1908, in Lompoc. He was a descendent of early California settlers, including a grandmother who walked behind a covered wagon from Missouri to Sonoma.
A graduate of the University of Southern California, Callis studied pharmacological chemistry. During World War II, he served as a pharmacist's mate in the U.S. Navy. While serving on the U.S.S. Suwannee aircraft carrier, he visited Nagasaki, Japan, three weeks after the dropping of the atom bomb. Upon his honorable discharge, Callis held the title of chief pharmacist's mate.
Callis and his wife, Lucia Roach Callis, settled in Los Gatos in 1946 and opened Green's Pharmacy on Main Street. About a decade later, the coming of Highway 17 necessitated the pharmacy's move to 218 N. Santa Cruz Ave., where it remained until 1964.
Fred and Lucia Callis were strong supporters of The Terraces of Los Gatos and were among of the first residents of the retirement community on Blossom Hill Road. Fred Callis also was a member of the Los Gatos Rotary Club for 52 years.
Callis is survived by Lucia, his wife of 60 years, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews.
Memorial services have been held. Donations may be made to the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 330 Distel Circle, Suite A, Los Altos, 94022.
