Three goals, two wins for Los Gatos girls soccer
By Dick Sparrer
Megan McFarland, Becky May and Bethany Peterson each scored goals to lead the Los Gatos girls soccer team to back-to-back wins last week in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Gatos made the three goals stand up for wins over Gunn (2-1) and Palo Alto (1-0), but the Wildcats lost 1-0 to Los Altos later in the week to see their league record stretch to 3-3-1 and their season mark to 3-6-3.
McFarland scored a second-half goal off a Peterson assist to knock the score at 1-1 against Gunn, and May snapped the tie when she scored later in the half off an assist from Kristen Horn.
Gunn had taken the early lead with a first-half goal.
Los Gatos and Palo Alto played a scoreless first half, but Peterson broke up the goose eggs with a goal in the second half that gave the Cats a 1-0 win over the Vikings.
Gatos finished the week with the tough 1-0 loss to Los Altos.
The Leigh girls had a rougher time last week. The Longhorns ran head first into league powerhouses Mitty and Presentation, and Leigh lost twice to slip to 1-2-3 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
The Longhorns, 5-3-4 for the year, were pounded 7-0 by Mitty to open the week, but lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to the Panthers a few days later.
In boys soccer action last week, Los Gatos cruised to two wins and a tie to push its record to 3-0-3 in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL and its overall mark to 6-3-5.
Unassisted goals by Rory Quick and Miguel Ryan helped the Cats pull out a tight 2-1 win over Los Altos to finish the week. Quick scored a first-half goal to help send the Cats in at intermission locked in a 1-1 draw, and Ryan snapped the tie with a second-half goal that proved the game winner.
Ryan had scored a second-half goal off a penalty kick to lift the Cats to a 1-0 win over Gunn to open the week.
Quick scored twice, off assists from Ryan and Ben Frazier, to help the Wildcats fight Palo Alto to a 2-2 tie. The two squads share the De Anza Division lead.
Two goals by junior midfielder Pete Pries sparked the Leigh boys to a 2-0 win over Overfelt in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL.
Pries gave the Longhorns a 1-0 lead at intermission with a first-half goal, and he scored an insurance goal in the second half. Sophomore forward Casey Gray assisted Pries on one of his two goals.
Leigh, 3-0-2 in the division and 8-2-4 for the year, battled Pioneer to a scoreless tie later in the week.
