Los Gatos Cinema
Local theater continues a history that began in 1915, thanks to three determined art-film aficionados
|
Los Gatans have enjoyed films at the movie theater in Los Gatos since 1915, when it was built as the Strand for silent movies and a huge Wurlitzer organ rolled out accompanying tunes. Since then, the vintage theater has gone through several incarnations: It became the Premier in the 1930s, and the marquee was added. Around 1940, it was known as the Gatos. It survived a devastating fire in the 1970s, and the 1989 Loma In 1993, it became the Los Gatos Cinema. Los Gatans were happy when the Camera Cinema chain took over the lease and returned the theater to the art-house role the theater enjoyed in the 1970s. Jim Zuur, Jack NyBlom and Dennis Skaags, owners of Camera Cinema (which comprises the Towne, Los Gatos, Camera One and Camera 3 theaters) are former filmmakers, who have poured their creative force into a business that is an ever-changing work of art.
