The Great Race

Essay contest focuses on the history of the county

The California Pioneers of Santa Clara County is holding its annual Santa Clara County Historical Essay Contest, in which participants of all ages can win one of six prizes, ranging from $500 for first place to $25 for third honorable-mention.

Essays, which should be between 3,000 and 10,000 words--or approximately 10 to 30 pages--may be about any person, place or event related to Santa Clara County, from its beginnings to the recent past. Each essay should include a short introduction or preface, a table of contents, a bibliography and a list of sources and persons consulted for information. Writers must include their name, address and phone number on the title page of their essays. Students should also include the name of their school and their homeroom or history teacher.

Submissions must be made in duplicate; one copy goes to the Pioneer Archives and the other goes to the California Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. Main Library in downtown San Jose. The Pioneers reserve exclusive publication rights to all essays. Individuals who have received the first-prize award within the past three years are not eligible to compete.

Essays may be mailed to Campbell, Warburton Law Offices, 111 W. St. John St., Suite 440, San Jose, 95113.

Winners will receive their awards at the CPSSC quarterly luncheon, scheduled for June 3 at Lou's Village in San Jose, at which time the first three winners are asked to give brief presentations on their essays. Entry deadline is April 24. For more information, call Helen MacCarthy at 408.578.4485.
