'Auditions' for the annual Music in the Plaza begin

The Town of Los Gatos Arts Commission is now accepting demo tapes or CDs and packets from musicians and musical groups interested in performing in the 1999 Music in the Plaza summer concert series.

The free concerts take place on Sunday afternoons in the Town Plaza Park, generally from 5 to 7 p.m., June 20 through Aug. 29. The nonprofit Arts Commission aims to provide a diverse program of music in a variety of styles, forms and cultural traditions. MIP performances from previous years have included big band, bluegrass, Celtic, classical, gospel, jazz, light opera, mariachi, oldies, R&B, rock and soul.

Although the concerts are free to the public, the Arts Commission raises the funding to pay performers through contributions from the community--from both private citizens and local businesses--in the form of donations and sponsorships. Contributions in any amount are welcome.

The deadline for demos is March 15. They can be mailed to Town of Los Gatos, Attn: Jenny Linenberger, P.O. Box 949, Los Gatos, Calif., 95031. Musicians who submitted demos last year should contact the Los Gatos Community Services Department before submitting again this year. For more information on MIP demos, donations or sponsorships, call 354-6820.
