George Dunajski keeps blacksmithing alive in his Santa Cruz Mountains studio

Blacksmithing was born with the Iron Age more than 2,000 years ago. With the onset of the industrial revolution in the late 18th and 19th centuries, many of the blacksmith's services were replaced by machines that could do the same work more quickly, albeit with less quality. "Blacksmithing almost died out completely in the 1930s, and then it had its resurrection," says Los Gatos artist-blacksmith George Dunajski Jr., who estimates there are currently around 15,000 professional and amateur blacksmiths in the United States. "I think people are just tired of run-of-the-mill iron. They want something original that they can conceive, something different."
