Vikes still rolling
Five players scored in double digits in back-to-back games to lead the West Valley Community College men's basketball team to the Northern California Community College basketball championship.
The Vikings whipped Monterey Peninsula College 94-70 in the semifinals, then crushed Sierra College 92-76 in the title game.
West Valley will now be in the fight for the state championship. The Vikings will compete in the state tourney March 7-9 at the San Jose State University Event Center.
Bennett Davison jammed 37 points and Jacobi Thompson and Jamaal Sanford pitched in 34 points apiece in the last two games to lead the Vikes to the title.
Davison led the Vikings with 23 points in the easy win over Sierra in the NorCal finals. Andy Newman bombed 18 points in the victory and Thompson and Sanford had 14 apiece.
Bob Ladine drained four three-pointers to finish with 12 points for West Valley.
A game earlier, Thompson and Sanford had 20 points each to lead all West Valley scorers in the semifinal win over Monterey. Davison supported with 14 points and Ladine and Newman added 13 apiece. Thompson, Ladine and Newman each drilled three three-pointers.
The two wins helped the Vikings improve to 28-2 for the year as they prepare for the state tourney.
