Wallis leads golf team to win

    By Dick Sparrer

For the past two years, there has been no match for Marcia Wallis when it comes to girls golf in the Central Coast Section.

And when she plays golf against the boys as a member of the Los Gatos High School team? Well, she's not too bad in that arena, either.

In fact, Wallis was the medalist when the Wildcats opened the 1999 golf season at home on the LaRinconada Country Club fairways with a 224-239 victory over Wilcox.

Wallis carded a 5-over par 39 to lead the Wildcats to the win over the Chargers in the first match of the season in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The senior star is the lone returner from the Gatos team that finished third in the division a year ago. She's a two-time CCS champion in girls competition. As a sophomore she was second in the Northern California tournament, and finished fourth at NorCal last year.

The rest of the Cats are underclassmen, including juniors Phil Smith, Chris Abel and Matt Gingery, sophomores Bobby James, Michael Bayne and Eric Hansen and freshmen Chris McMorrow, Trevor Branon, Charlie Clarke, Mike Dixon and Brian Cope.

Clarke finished second to Wallis in the second opener against Wilcox. The freshman carded a low 41 at LaRinconada.

    Netters win

Senior Kevin Pilger posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles to lead the Los Gatos boys tennis team to a tight 4-3 nonleague win over Del Mar in the Wildcats' season opener last week.

    Gatos girls fall

The Los Gatos girls softball team lost their season opener 4-1 to Saratoga last week, despite a 6-hitter by Gatos hurler Nancy Mills. The Wildcats could support their pitcher with just one run on three hits.

    Volleyball split

The Gatos boys volleyball team split in league play last week, beating Fremont 15-7, 15-2, 15-5 after losing a 15-9, 15-11, 17-15 decision to Homestead. The Wildcats are now 1-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Cats will host Leland on March 9 and visit Leigh on March 11 in a pair of 6:30 p.m. matches.
