Amy LaPine couldn't have been better.

    Neither could Sarah McAleer.

But despite the efforts of the two senior speedsters, the Los Gatos girls track and field team opened the season with a tough 72-54 loss to St. Francis.

The loss came in the Wildcats' first meet of the year, and also their opener in the DeAnza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Gatos boys managed to run to a victory the same day, beating Lynbrook 71-55 in a nonleague meet. The Wildcats won't open their league slate until next week.

LaPine and McAleer were each double winners, but their efforts weren't enough to spark the Cats to a team win.

LaPine breezed to a first in the 400 meters in 61.1 and romped to a victory in the 300 hurdles in 49.4. She also anchored the winning mile relay team with a 61.9 split. The team of Michelle Beritzhoff, Racine Lewin, Heather Hennessy and LaPine stopped the watch at 4:22.2 for a Gatos victory in the event.

McAleer cruised to a first-place finish in the mile in 5:31.1 and doubled with a first in the 2-mile in 12:11.9.

Sophomore Emily King started off the year with a solid showing. King was first in the long jump at 16-1 and added a second in the triple jump at 31-31Ž2.

Hennessy, another talented Los Gatos sophomore, coasted to a first in the 800 meters in 2:25.5 and ran a 62.9 split in the 4x400 relay. Hennessy is a transfer from Mitty.

Beritzhoff, a freshman who ran a leg of the winning relay team, was second to Hennessy in the 800 in 2:27.

"That's an outstanding freshman time," said Gatos girls coach Willie Harmatz. Freshman Aly Chavez was third in the half mile in 2:33.9.

Soph Emily Obermeier topped the high jump bar at 4-10 for a Los Gatos victory.

Anne Farnady had a solid double in the weight events for the Wildcats. The junior was second in the discus at 105-5 and added a third in the shot put at 29-9.

    Regner a winner

Junior distance star Zack Regner sparked the Gatos boys to an easy win over Lynbrook in a nonleague meet the same day.

Regner was first in the 800 meters in 2:06.6 and also took the mile in 4:38.9.

Sophomore Matt Bates was second in the 800 in 2:07.1, and soph Russ Martin was second in the mile at 4:39.5, with Bates third in 4:44.0.

Seung Lee, another talented Los Gatos sophomore, topped the 110-meter high hurdles in 19.2 for a first-place finish.

Senior Cearull Horgan was a winner in the high jump at 5-4, and junior Eric Sturm soared 19-0 for a first in the long jump.

Senior Max Hirschman sprinted to a second in the 100 in 11.9, and junior Kevin Carney was second in the 200 in 24.9.

Steve Smith, another junior, ended up second in the shot put at 39-3.

    Skrabe stars

The boys frosh-soph squad romped to a 69-57 nonleague victory over Lynbrook behind the efforts of double-winners Nick Skrabe and Tomas Viramontez.

Skrabe whirled the discus 110-4 for a first, but it was in the shot put where he really shone. The powerful sophomore heaved the shot 49-1 to finish first, and his mark ranked No. 5 on the all-time Gatos frosh-soph list.

Jerry Yuhara was second in the shot at 40-101Ž2 and also nailed second in the discus at 110-2. Viramontez won both the distance events, taking the mile in 5:02.2 and the 2-mile in 11:07.6. John Webb sprinted to a first in the 200 meters in 25.5 and was third in the 100 in 12.1.

    Rehder wins two

Theresa Rehder won two events, but the Gatos girls junior varsity lost a league game to St. Francis 70-56.

Rehder rambled to a win the mile in 6:02 and took the 2-mile in 13:23 to lead the Los Gatos effort against the Lancers.

Katie Zuparko was first in the 200 in 28.9 and second in the 100 in 13.9, and Cristen McClenathan was second in both the 200 in 29.2 and the long jump at 14-1, and she ran a 65.9 split on the winning 4x400 relay team.

Lindsay Erickson covered the 65-meter hurdles in 11.6 for a Gatos victory, and Theresa Fuquay was a winner in the 400 meters in 66.4. Rebecca Fong ran second in the 400 in 67.8.

    Cats in K-Bell

The Los Gatos tracksters will compete in the K-Bell Classic on March 13 on the Los Gatos track before returning to league action in both boys and girls competition on March 18 at Milpitas.
