Vikings fall in finals
It went right down to the final shot, but when the basketball rolled off the rim in the final seconds of the California Community College men's basketball finals, West Valley Community College had to settle for a second straight second-place finish to Ventura.
Andy Newman poured in 28 points and dished off six assists, but it wasn't enough for West Valley in a tough 82-81 loss to Ventura. Newman buried seven three-pointers in the game.
Jacobi Thompson hit a couple of threes and finished with 15 points for the Vikings, and Bennett Davison added 14 points and a team high nine rebounds.
Bob Ladine drained three threes to finish with nine points. Jamaal Sanford added eight points, Taplar Mvogo four and Toby Vares three.
The Vikings had beaten Saddleback 74-60 to earn a spot in the Saturday night finals. Davison had the hot hand with 23 points and Thompson canned five three-pointers on his way to 17 points.
Newman finished with 12 points, including a pair of threes, and Sanford had 11 points. Ladine hit five, Mvogo four and Vares two.
Bob Burton's Vikings, 30-3 for the year, were making their third appearance in the state championship game in the past five years.
Bud Ogden League
The Bud Ogden Instructional Basketball League is currently holding signups for boys and girls in grades 3-12 interested in playing spring basketball from March 16-May 26.
