    Teachers, district start mediation

Los Gatos Union School District officials and teachers continued working on a resolution to the stalled contract talks last week, and began meeting with a mediator.

Superintendent Mary Ann Park says the session yielded agreement on contract language; wages will be on the table at the next session with the mediator April 1.

Dozens of teachers and parents showed up to put pressure on the school board March 9, after teachers rejected four of the district's proposals.

    Kindergarten registration

Los Gatos Union School District, Lakeside Joint School District and the Loma Prieta Joint Union School District have begun registering kindergarten students for the 1999-2000 school year. Children must be at least 5 years old on or before Dec. 2 to register.

Each district requires an application packet to be filled out. Parents must show a birth certificate, current immunization records and proof of residency in the district.

Applications are available in each school district office and in all LGUSD schools.

    Joanne Benjamin is recognized

State Sen. Byron Sher named former Los Gatos Town Council member Joanne Benjamin "Woman of the Year" for the state's 11th Senate district on March 15.

Sher presented Benjamin with a resolution honoring her in a special session of the Senate.

Benjamin served on the council for 16 years while teaching at Los Gatos High School, serving on various boards and commissions, and raising three children.

"With all that going on, it is extraordinary that Joanne was recognized as the most accessible and visible elected official in Los Gatos," Sher said.
