    The Prowler

In honor of the wearin' o' the green seen March 17, several local eateries offer special holiday fare, a fact that didn't go unnoticed by the Prowler, who loves food and festivities. As usual, both of these will be in abundance at C.B. Hannegan's, Los Gatos' own tribute to Ireland in pub form on Bachman Avenue. For $35, folks can eat, drink and be merry all day at Hannegan's annual St. Patrick's Day shindig, which includes musical entertainment and the usual spread of food. Sorry--the "drink" part requires a separate outlay of cash.

Putting an Italian spin on this very Irish tradition, Aldo's La Strada restaurant on E. Main Street has renamed the holiday "San Patrizo Day." They are greenwashing the menu, offering everything from green pasta to green tiramisu. This cat wonders if the colors are natural or artificial--perhaps this is how Sam I Am felt when pondering his green eggs and ham!

Green is also symbolic of nature, a cause worthy of celebration all year round. Now that Spring is springing, the nonprofit Youth Science Institute in Vasona Lake County Park has some great afternoon classes for children in various age groups from pre-kindergarten through third grade. Meeting days and times depend on the age group.

Shell Secrets, from March 29 through April 1, lets kids examine various seashells and teaches them about the shells' form, function and chemical content. Pond Ponderings, offered April 5 through 8, gives youngsters a chance to explore the YSI's indoor pond and discover the tiny animals living there. Kids will also learn about pond ecosystems and make a pond critter. For class prices or more information, call 356-4945.
