Athavale wins twice, but the Los Gatos tennis team splits

    By Dick Sparrer

The Los Gatos tennis team split a couple of 4-3 decisions last week, but the Wildcats picked the right time for their victory.

The Cats edged Santa Clara 4-3 in a match in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League before losing a nonleague decision to Mitty.

Ayan Athavale nailed a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles to lead the Cats to a win over the Bruins. Gatos swept in doubles play to secure the win. Marc Matulich and Vincent Lok teamed for a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles, and Benjamin Kane and Nick Russell won 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2. Chris Choi and Luke Felix combined for a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles to help clinch the team victory.

The Wildcats, 1-0 in the division and 2-1 for the year, dropped a tight 4-3 nod to Mitty later in the week.

Athavale won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, but the Cats won just two of three doubles bouts. Matulich and Lok won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1, and Kane and Russell won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2.

    Golfers fall

The Los Gatos golf team dropped a tight 209-214 decision to Los Altos last week at the LaRinconada Country Club.

Freshman Charlie Clarke fired a 7-over par 41 to lead all Gatos finishers in the match. Eric Hansen carded a 42, Chris McMorrow shot a 43 and Matt Gingery and Trevor Branon each finished at 44 for the Wildcats.

    Volleyball win

The Los Gatos boys volleyball team pushed its record to 2-1 in league play with a 15-10, 15-13, 15-11 win over Leland last week. Homestead is 3-0 and atop the standings in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Cats will visit Saratoga on March 16, 6:30 p.m., before heading south for the Santa Barbara Tournament on March 20.
