    Rollin whirls shutout for Wildcats

    By Dick Sparrer

The season may be young, but Alex Rollin has already come up big two times for the Los Gatos baseball team in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Wildcats lost their league opener to Wilcox, then Rollin went the distance to lift the Cats to a big win over Saratoga.

Gatos lost 5-3 to Cupertino last week and needed a win two days later to get even in the division. The Cats called on Rollin and he delivered--both on the mound and at the plate.

The senior right-hander went the distance to toss a 2-hit shutout and lead the Cats to a 3-0 win over Milpitas. Rollin, 2-1 for the year, struck out 13 in the win.

But he also delivered with his bat, ripping a solo homer in the fourth.

Senior Steve Sweeney had already come through with the big hit of the game, a two-run homer in the third, and gave Rollin all the support he needed for the win.

Rollin led the nine-hit Los Gatos attack with three hits and Sweeney had a pair of hits. Chris Willard singled and doubled for the Cats and Travis Howell ripped a double.

Los Gatos, 3-4 for the year and 2-2 in league, had lost a 5-3 nod to Cupertino to open the week. Alex Anderson clubbed a double to key a three-hit attack for the Cats.

Gatos jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, but Cupertino rallied for four in the third to take control of the game. The clubs matched runs in the fourth and Gatos scored again in the sixth, but the Pioneers held on for the win.

The Wildcats have four games slated this week. They were to host Fremont on Monday, will visit Gunn on March 20, 3:30 p.m., and will host Saratoga on March 22, 3:30 p.m. in league play. The Cats will face El Camino on March 23, 11 a.m., in the first game of the Serra Tournament at Serra High School.
