LGHS senior watches government in action
Syambra Moitozo, vice president of the senior class of Los Gatos High School, saw the federal government in action when she participated in the Presidential Classroom Scholars Program. Moitozo, as well as hundreds of other high school juniors and seniors from around the country and abroad, toured government offices in Washington, D.C., from Jan. 16 to Jan. 26.
In addition to visiting the offices of senators and representatives, students observed congressional meetings, learned about the Central Intelligence Agency, toured the White House and held a mock presidential election with student candidates. Students also participated in small-group workshops and debated current issues, such as the role of the media in the American political process.
Moitozo plans to attend a four-year university in fall 2002 and study communications.
Presidential Classroom is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, civic education organization. For 34 years, more than 92,000 high school students have participated in the Scholars Program.
