Eastman, Hdez big winners for Gatos swimming team

    By Dick Sparrer

Junior Catherine Eastman and sophomore Gabby Hdez won two events apiece, but the Los Gatos girls swimming team dropped a tight 85-82 decision to Monta Vista last week in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Eastman took the 200-meter freestyle in 2:01.44 and the 100 free in 56.72, and Hdez won the 200 individual medley in 2:15.92 and the 500 free in 5:20.77.

The two also teamed with junior Becca Stein and soph Brittany Shand to take the 400 free relay in 4:05.04.

The Los Gatos boys, meanwhile, lost 114-68 to Monta Vista despite getting two wins each from junior Richie Crowder and sophomore Brian Williams.

Crowder took the 200 free in 1:52.27 and the 100 free in 50.00, and Williams won the 200 IM in 2:12.96 and the 500 free in 5:12.62. They also joined forces with Eric Soung and Austin Nichols for a win in the 200 medley relay in 1:49.48.

Soung was first in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.46.

    Cats net win

Junior Will McAlister nailed a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles to start the Los Gatos boys tennis team on the road to a tight 4-3 win over Palo Alto last week in De Anza Division play.

Freshman Brian Brogan posted a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, Lee Gerston won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 and Victor Larssen won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 as the Wildcats swept in singles play.

    Softball team falls

The Los Gatos girls softball team dropped a heartbreaker last week, falling 1-0 to Milpitas.

The Trojans broke up the scoreless game with a run in the sixth, but that turned out to be the difference in the game.

Senior outfielder Tara Hodge doubled, but Los Gatos had just two hits on the day.

The Cats will be back on the diamond this week to visit Los Altos on March 20, 3:30 p.m., and to host Santa Clara on March 22, 3:30 p.m.

The Gatos girls won a couple of games in the Twin Creeks Tournament last weekend, beating Hillsdale 5-1 and edging Monterey 5-3.

Sophomore ace Melissa Mullins tossed the Cats to the back-to-back wins, flipping a couple of 5-hitters.

Amanda Palasky and Kim Pugh ripped three hits apiece to lead the Cats to the 5-1 win over Hillsdale. Pugh knocked in a couple of runs for Gatos.

Virginia Fritsch singled and homered to drive in two runs and Hodge had two hits to lead the Cats to the 5-3 win over Monterey.

Gatos opened up a 3-0 lead in the first, but Monterey tied it with three in the top of the third. Once again, the Cats answered right back with two in the third to take the lead.
