Sullivan leads boys volleyball team to back-to-back wins
By Dick Sparrer
It was a killer performance for Shaun Sullivan, in more ways than one. Sullivan hammered down 20 kills in two matches to lead the Los Gatos boys volleyball team to back-to-back wins over Mountain View and Saratoga last week.
Sullivan's 11 kills led the Wildcats to a 15-3, 15-5, 15-13 win over Mountain View to open the week. Brady Smith buried 10 kills in the win and Fletcher Anderson added seven.
Smith and Scott Stephenson shared the team lead in service aces with two apiece for the Cats.
Los Gatos improved to 13-2 for the year and to 3-0 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with a 15-7, 15-9, 15-11 win over Saratoga later in the week.
Sullivan led the Cats with nine kills and tied Neil Perry for the team lead in service aces with three each. Max Haueter supported with eight kills and Perry had seven.
The Wildcats were coming off of a championship showing at the Alisal Tournament. Joining Sullivan, Smith, Anderson, Stephenson, Perry and Haueter for the tourney were Nathan Delaney, Ryan Holst, Chad Yamate, Robert Haushalter, Trevor Christiansen, Mason McKown, Michael Conry and Mike McDowell.
Los Gatos will be back in action this week, visiting Wilcox on March 19 for a 7 p.m. league match before heading to the Leland Tournament on March 23.
The Wildcats will play their first home match of the 2002 season when they host Homestead on March 25, 7 p.m.
The Los Gatos junior varsity volleyball team crushed Leland 15-1, 15-3 in the championship match to take the title in the 16-team Leland JV Tournament.
The Gatos JVs beat Alisal 15, 15-2, Valley Christian 15-3, 15-4 and St. Ignatius 15-11, 15-2 in pool play before taking Fremont 15-4, 15-9 and SI 15-4, 13-15, 15-13 to move into the finals against Leland.
The young Wildcats, 3-0 in league play and 14-1 for the year, will travel to Santa Barbara this weekend for the San Marcos High School JV Challenge.
