Residents of the new Summerhill Homes development in Los Gatos will be sending their children to Van Meter Elementary School instead of Daves Avenue, following a March 13 decision by the Los Gatos Union School District's board of trustees to alter the area's attendance boundaries.
The Los Gatos Glen development, which consists of 32 homes, is bordered by Highway 17, Blossom Hill Road and Roberts Road, across from the entrance of Vasona Lake County Park.
Although the Summerhill homes originally fell in the Daves Avenue attendance area, Daves is already the district's most populous school. Van Meter, on the other hand, has the smallest enrollment of the three downtown elementary schools, which led district business manager Mike Brandy to recommend the boundary change.
At present, only one Los Gatos Glen home is occupied, and the district sent a letter to that family, whose five-year-old is already scheduled to begin school at Van Meter this fall.
Concern about crowding at Daves Avenue was also an issue in April 1991, when the board changed certain attendance areas to send more students to Van Meter and Blossom Hill schools.
