Chris Sands and Jeff Garnett each came up winners on the tennis court last week. But the same can't be said for their high school tennis teams.
Sands won a thrilling 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) decision at No. 1 singles, but Los Gatos dropped a 5-2 decision to powerful Homestead in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The same day, Garnett was rolling to a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, but Leigh lost a 5-2 decision to Westmont in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Sands and Garnett have been consistent winners in the early stages of the 1996 season, even if their teams haven't been winning.
Gatos is 0-2 in league play and 1-3 for the year. Sands won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 to lead the Cats to their only team win this year, a 5-2 victory over Fremont. Sands won 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 (6-2) at No. 1 in his club's 6-1 loss to Palo Alto.
Leigh is 2-1 in the division. Garnett had posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles in a 6-1 win over Prospect, and Leigh beat Piedmont Hills 4-3 despite a tough three-set loss by Garnett at No. 1.
