Los Gatos golfers drive to two wins over Cupertino

    By Dick Sparrer

The Los Gatos golf team is off to a hot start in the 2000 spring season. So is Saratoga. And neither performance comes as any surprise to Los Gatos golf coach Jim Marino. That's pretty much the way he expects things to go this year.

"It looks like it will be Los Gatos or Saratoga winning it," said Marino as he assessed the golf race in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Wildcats boast a solid pack of returners from a team that finished second in the division a year ago.

Sophomores Trevor Branon, Chris McMorrow and Charlie Clark, juniors Michael Bayne, Bobby James and Eric Hansen and senior Chris Abel are all back from the 1999 squad.

The Cats two-timed Cupertino last week to up their league record to 6-0 and their overall mark to 7-0. Gatos whipped the Pioneers 173-181 on their home course at Deep Cliff in Cupertino, then beat them 203-228 at LaRinconada.

Bayne scored a three-over par 33 and Branon and James were close behind with 34s in the win at Deep Cliff. Clark finished at 35 with McMorrow firing a 37 as the top five Cats all broke 40.

Branon led the way with a one-over 35 at LaRinconada later in the week. McMorrow finished at 38 with Clark shooting a 41, James a 42 and Bayne a 47.

    Boys Tennis

William McCalister won twice at No. 1 singles to lead the Los Gatos boys tennis team to back-to-back wins in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL last week.

McCalister won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 to lead the Cats to a 7-0 win over Santa Clara, and he came back with a 6-0, 6-4 victory in the one slot in a 5-2 triumph over Mountain View.

Greg Faltersack backed up McCalister with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles against the Bruins. Mark Matulich won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Michael Franchi won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4.

Doubles winners included Ben Kane and Thomas Helloboid, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1; Adam Clark and Matt Falkenhagen, 6-2, 7-6 (7-0) at No. 2; and Chris Choi and Geoff Hubbard, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3.

Franchi joined McCalister as a singles winner against Mountain View, winning 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.

Winning in doubles play were Kane and Helloboid-- 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 1; Clark and Falkenhagen-- 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2; and Choi and Hubbard-- 6-0, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 3.

The Cats, 2-1 in division play, had opened the year with a 4-2 loss to Wilcox. Faltersack won 6-4, 7-6 at No. 2 singles and Choi and Helloboid teamed for a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 3 doubles.

The Gatos junior varsity lost 5-2 to the Chargers, despite wins by Nick Russell at No. 1 singles (7-5, 6-3) and Ivan Yip and Perry Richardson at No. 3 doubles (6-4, 6-2).

But the young Cats came back with a 7-0 win over Santa Clara. Russell, Stas Koltsov, Chris Wencel and Umair Bajwa won in singles play and the doubles teams of Hubbard-David Reagan, Phillip Jacke-Ben Swartley and Yip-Richardson all won.

    Girls Softball

The Los Gatos girls dropped their first two games of the annual Charlie Miguel Tournament, falling 5-3 to Prospect and 5-2 to Pioneer.

Stacey Funston had two hits for the Wildcats in the loss to the Panthers, and Jessica Enright was tagged with the loss despite tossing a six-hitter.

The Wildcats lost a second game in the tourney, falling 5-2 to Pioneer. Laura Hertan had two hits for Los Gatos in the game.

The Cats slipped to 1-3 for the year when they lost 7-5 to Santa Clara last week in the first game of the year in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.

    Boys Volleyball

The Los Gatos boys volleyball team will jump into league play this week when the Wildcats host Saratoga on March 23, 7 p.m., to open the De Anza Division season.

The Cats will hit the road this weekend to compete in the Santa Barbara Invitational Tournament.
