    Arone Howe

Former Los Gatan Arone Francis Howe died on Feb. 9, of pneumonia complications in Pleasanton, where she had been residing. She was 88.

Born Oct. 8, 1911, in Hanford, Howe grew up in San Francisco. She moved with her parents, Milton and Mabel Francis, to Los Gatos in 1927, where they bought some land off Blossom Hill Road and planted an orchard of apricot trees. It was a familiar return for her father, who was born in the Almaden area.

After graduating from Los Gatos High School, Howe earned a degree in elementary educational and librarianship at what was then called San Jose State Teachers' College. She taught with the Department of the Interior in Native American pueblo schools in New Mexico; there she also met her husband, Jack Howe.

She spent many years working as a librarian at Union Middle School and as a librarian for the Santa Clara County Library system in Campbell, Saratoga and Cupertino branches. She helped run a public library that was located in the We and Our Neighbors clubhouse, at the intersection of Union Avenue and Los Gatos-Almaden Road. Howe was particularly devoted to the preservation of the clubhouse and the continuation of the organization, which was formed in 1892 by a group of farm women. Howe was also a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood.

Her family remembers her as a woman of quiet grace who enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, doing crossword puzzles and reading.

Survivors include husband of 58 years, John Howe, of Pleasanton; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Russell Taylor, of Oakland; and granddaughter, Kristina Taylor, of Oakland.

Friends are invited to attend a celebration of Howe's life on March 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the We and Our Neighbors clubhouse, 15480 Union Ave. Donations may be made to the We and Our Neighbors restoration fund, in care of 15349 Warwick Road, San Jose, 95124.

    Sister Rose Richmond

Sister Rose Edith Richmond, S.N.J.M., died on Feb. 20, at the Convent of the Holy Names in Los Gatos. She was 81.

Richmond was born Nov. 13, 1918, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the next to the youngest of five children. When she was seven, the family relocated to California, where she attended public schools in San Leandro. After graduating high school, Richmond earned a music scholarship to Holy Names College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in music in 1940.

While at college, Richmond felt a religious calling; in 1943, she entered the novitiate of the Holy Names at Lake Merritt in Oakland. She professed her vows in February 1946. Richmond ran a teaching ministry in kindergarten and primary grades for 25 years, with another 17 years teaching the Suzuki method of violin.

Survivors include sister, Barbara Hawkins, brothers, Gordon, Jack and Moreland Richmond; and all her fellow Sisters and Associates of the Holy Names.

A Mass of Resurrection was held, with interment at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery in Hayward. Donations may be made to the SNJM Ministry Fund, P.O. Box 907, Los Gatos, 95031.

    Cloyd Fowler

Former Los Gatan Cloyd E. Fowler died on Feb. 22, in Santa Cruz at the age of 84.

Fowler was preceded in death by wife, Marvis Fowler. Survivors include sons Jacque Doerges of Montara and Jim Fowler of Agoura.

Memorial Services were held, with interment at Los Gatos Memorial Park.

    Glenn Holtz

Los Gatos resident Glenn A. Holtz died on Feb. 26, at the age of 85. He was born Aug. 7, 1914, in North Dakota, and was a self-employed accountant.

Holtz was predeceased by wife, Marjorie J. Holtz, and daughter, Kathleen Larson. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, William and Teresa Holtz of Auburn; daughter and son-in-law, Priscilla and Fritz Stellrecht of Fullerton; son-in-law, Duane Larson; grandsons, Christopher Holtz and Richard Larson; and great-granddaughter Katarina Larson.
