Arone Howe
Former Los Gatan Arone Francis Howe died on Feb. 9, of pneumonia complications in Pleasanton, where she had been residing. She was 88.
Born Oct. 8, 1911, in Hanford, Howe grew up in San Francisco. She moved with her parents, Milton and Mabel Francis, to Los Gatos in 1927, where they bought some land off Blossom Hill Road and planted an orchard of apricot trees. It was a familiar return for her father, who was born in the Almaden area.
After graduating from Los Gatos High School, Howe earned a degree in elementary educational and librarianship at what was then called San Jose State Teachers' College. She taught with the Department of the Interior in Native American pueblo schools in New Mexico; there she also met her husband, Jack Howe.
She spent many years working as a librarian at Union Middle School and as a librarian for the Santa Clara County Library system in Campbell, Saratoga and Cupertino branches. She helped run a public library that was located in the We and Our Neighbors clubhouse, at the intersection of Union Avenue and Los Gatos-Almaden Road. Howe was particularly devoted to the preservation of the clubhouse and the continuation of the organization, which was formed in 1892 by a group of farm women. Howe was also a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood.
Her family remembers her as a woman of quiet grace who enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, doing crossword puzzles and reading.
Survivors include husband of 58 years, John Howe, of Pleasanton; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Russell Taylor, of Oakland; and granddaughter, Kristina Taylor, of Oakland.
Friends are invited to attend a celebration of Howe's life on March 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the We and Our Neighbors clubhouse, 15480 Union Ave. Donations may be made to the We and Our Neighbors restoration fund, in care of 15349 Warwick Road, San Jose, 95124.
