Heather Hennessy didn't get much of a breather between 800s at the West Valley Relays held last weekend at West Valley Community College in Saratoga. But you certainly couldn't tell by her times. The Los Gatos speedster ran to a victory in the 800 meters in 2:17.34, then she came back just 45 minutes later to run a 2:17.5 split in the sprint medley relay.

"She anchored our sprint medley to a first, beating Berkeley off of the last turn," said Gatos coach Willie Harmatz. "We set a new school record."

The foursome of Aly Chavez (25.9 in the 200), Meghan Kirby-McFarland (27.2 in the 200), Simone Drucker (59.6 in the 400) and Hennessy ran 4:11.3 to break the old school mark of 4:15 set in 1986.

Hennessy's 2:17.5 came less than an hour after she had run 2:17.34 to win the individual 800, posting the best time of the year to date in the Central Coast Section. Her effort was one of two CCS bests recorded by the Gatos girls at the relays.

Senior weight star Annie Farnady heaved the discus 133-6 for a first-place finish. Her mark is tops in CCS and ranks as her best ever. It was also the third-best throw in Los Gatos history.

Michelle Beritzhoff joined her two teammates in the winner's circle. The sophomore sensation won the 1,500 meters in 4:53.4, the third best time in Gatos history.

Russ Martin and Matt Bates starred in the boys division at the West Valley Relays.

Martin finished second in the 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) in the school record time of 15:35.0. Martin, who crushed the old mark of 15:51 set in 1981, boasts the ninth-best 2-mile time in the state.

Bates finished third in the 1,500 meters in 4:08.3 (the equivilent of of 4:26 mile). A week earlier at the K-Bell Classic, Bates had finished first in the 800 meters in a CCS best 1:57.0.

Bill Stanton set a new school record in the steeplechase when he ran 7:45 to finish seventh overall, and he joined with Greg Tolan, Darren Key and Mike Rossmassler to nail sixth in the 4-mile relay in 20:08.

Seung Lee was seventh in the 110 high hurdles in 16.2, and he teamed with Payam Mokhtari, Bates and Tomas Viramontes to finish fourth in the sprint medley relay.

Other top marks recorded by Wildcats included: Nick Skrabe, 45-9 in the shot put; Jeff Hoeft, 4:20.6 in the 1,500; Mokhtari, 66.07 in the 400 hurdles; Emily King, a season best 16-2 in the long jump; and freshman Mallory Thornton, 5:17.0 in the 1,500.
