Freshman Catherine Eastman and senior Kelly Weeks each won two events to lead the Los Gatos girls swimming team to a tight 93-88 win over St. Francis last Friday in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Eastman, Weeks and sophomore Sara Clark were the only winners for the Wildcats, but they won enough to lead the Wildcats to the five-point victory over the Lancers.

Eastman took the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.54 and backed that up with a first in the 100 free in 58.76, and Weeks was tops in the 100 butterfly in 59.86 and added a first in the 500 free in 5:17.17.

Clark ran up 220.40 points to finish first in the diving event for the Wildcats.

Freshman Becca Stein was second in the 50 free in 26.93 with Rachael Jeffers third in 27.99, and Stein was third in the 100 fly in 1:07.24.

Marian Roan was second in both the 500 free in 5:32.70 and the 200 free in 2:07.90, Kacey Ballard was second in 100 breaststroke and Laura Davis was third in the 200 individual medley in 2:35.13.

Los Gatos added wins in the 200 free relay in 1:47.12 and the 400 free relay in 3:53.49 as the Cats evened their league record at 1-1. Eastman, Stein, Roan and Weeks joined forces to win each of the relays.

Earlier in the week, both the Gatos boys and girls teams had lost to Los Altos.

Weeks was a double winner and Eastman, Clark and Roan also won events, but the Gatos girls lost 94-86 to the Eagles.

Weeks won the 200 free in 1:56.26 and took the 100 free in 54.86 to lead the Gatos effort against Los Altos.

Eastman was a winner in the 100 fly in 54.86, Clark was first in diving and Roan, a sophomore, was tops in the 500 free in 5:29.17.

Gatos wrapped up the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay. Eastman, Roan, Stein and Weeks teamed to swim a 3:53.24 for the victory.

The Los Gatos boys lost 101-81 to Los Altos the same day.

Bobby Crowder won two events and helped Gatos to a couple of relay wins.

Crowder, a junior, was first in the 50 free in 27.04 and the 100 free in 51.70. He also helped both the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay teams to victories. Crowder teamed with Chris Lee, Rich Comeau and Brett Bannan for a first in the 200 medley relay in 1:50.56 and he joined with Adam Mayer, Philip Roan and Aaron Davis for a victory in the 400 free relay in 3:34.57.

Roan came through with a first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.03 just an event before the free relay.

Junior Brett Bertocci supported with a win in the 500 free in 5:23.44, and junior Nathan Sheffer won the diving event.

Los Gatos will be back in the water this week when they visit Monta Vista on March 31, 3 p.m., in girls and boys swimming action.

    Clark wins qualifer

Clark, who finished second in both league and CCS diving finals as a freshman, finished first at the national Junior Olympic diving regionals over the March 18-19 weekend in Kansas City, Mo.

Clark finished first on the 3-meter springboard to qualify for the U.S. National Championships on April 29 at USC. She also finished second in the 1-meter event to qualify for the nationals.

Sheffer and Katie Lampie, a Fisher Middle School eighth-grader, also qualified for the nationals.

Sheffer finished sixth in the 3-meter springboard event, and Lampie was fourth on the 1-meter board and sixth on the 3-meter.
