LGHS adds new electives to schedule for next year

    By Michelle Alaimo

When Los Gatos High School students begin registering for next school year's classes later this month, they'll find a variety of new electives.

Students will now be able to choose from Japanese I, Photo II, Theater Workshop II, Intermediate Band, Sessions in Sound, AP Computer Science and English 12. In addition to these courses, which have all been offered at some time in the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District, students will have a brand-new course to choose from--Graphic Design.

Principal Trudy McCulloch said the new elective offerings are part of the district's goal to enrich the elective program. Some courses, such as Japanese I, were added after a student poll showed student interest in studying the Japanese language.

As with all the courses, only time will tell if they will exist at all based on how many students sign up for each during registration.

However, McCulloch foresees no problems with the new Graphic Design course filling. "I think it's really going to be popular," she said.

The course has three teachers teaming up to teach 75 to 90 students on a rotating schedule. The students would spend 12 weeks in each section learning basic art, photography basics and Photoshop. Teachers Mike Costanzo, Joe Ripp and Scott Downs in an outline to the LG-SJUHSD board said they believe the real strength of the new class will be "the overlapping concepts taught from the point of view of each department."

They added that if demand and effectiveness is strong, the group might propose to add an advanced class for the following year.
