Museum association begins a search for a new executive
By Dale Bryant
Just when the Los Gatos Museum Association seemed to be going full-steam ahead, Executive Director Beverly Pevarnick submitted her resignation, effective March 31, citing personal business reasons. Pevarnick's husband runs a business which requires her full-time participation, she told the museum board.
The resignation comes as the LGMA has embarked upon a campaign to save a house which members believe was designed by noted architect Julia Morgan. The structure, dubbed the Oriental House, was jolted off its foundation during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and was scheduled for demolition by the Sisters of Presentation, who own the property on which the structure sits.
Recently, the county Historic Heritage Commission allocated some $212,500 toward the preservation project, which will require complete dismantling to move. The LGMA has its eyes on a piece of town-owned property at the corner of Winchester and Lark avenues as the future home of the building. According to Pevarnick, a house mover has estimated the cost to move the building at $750,000.
Kurt Anslinger, president of the museum association, says of Pevarnick's leaving, "We tried everything we could to keep her. Finally, though, she convinced us that it made more sense to hire a new executive to maintain the continuity rather than for her to take a leave of absence."
Pevarnick was hired for the part-time position some 18 months ago. For several years, the museum association functioned with no executive, but thanks to several bequests, the organization has been able to use revenue from investments for several part-time salaries.
In recent months, the LGMA has begun work on the Rosalie Burns Memorial Garden at the Tait Museum and is working with Los Gatos High School in development of a website to post its many historic photographs. A membership drive is about to get under way.
According to Anslinger, a search has begun for a new executive. "At first it will be a part-time position, but we hope it will evolve into full-time, especially if we get the Oriental House."
