Cristol, Eastman star, but Gatos girls lose
By Dick Sparrer
The Los Gatos girls came through with their share of wins when they hit the water for a dual meet against Los Altos in the tough De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
But the Wildcats couldn't get the win in the girls swimming event.
Gatos swimmers won seven of the 12 events contested in the dual meet, but the Wildcats dropped a 101-86 nod to the Eagles.
Things didn't go much better for the Los Gatos boys the same day. The Cats lost 112-74 to the Eagles, and could manage just three individual wins in the meet.
Lisa Cristol, Alix Eastman, Marian Roan and Sara Clark starred for the Gatos girls, despite the dual-meet defeat.
Cristol and Eastman were each double winners for the Wildcats. Cristol, a senior, breezed to wins in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:17.44 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.18, and Eastman, a junior, took the 200 individual medley in 2:07.72 and the 100 backstroke in 1:03.77.
Roan and Clark, both freshmen, also added individual wins for the Cats. Roan took the 500 free in 5:34.25, and Clark won the diving event with 211.4 points.
Cristol, Eastman and Roan also teamed with senior Elizabeth Espe for a victory in the 400 free relay in 4:01.15.
The Gatos girls qualified for the Central Coast Section meet in four of the events. Eastman's time in the 200 IM was good for CCS consideration, as was Roan's effort in the 500 free. Clark qualified for CCS with her diving mark, and the 400 free relay time was another CCS qualifier.
The Eagles dominated the meet with their depth. Los Altos nailed five seconds, seven thirds and eight fourths to accumulate valuable team points.
Lending depth for the Cats were Lindsay Norcott, second in the 200 free in 2:21.18; Roan, second in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.71; Espe, second in the 100 free in 1:03.21 and fourth in the 50 in 28.59; Jennifer Jesperson, second in diving with 134.4 points; and Taralyn Meusel, third in both the 100 free in 1:05.09 and 500 free in 6:30.18.
Sophomores Bobby Crowder and Nathan Sheffer were the lone individual winners for the Los Gatos boys against Los Altos.
Crowder qualified for CCS with his 2:04.77 for a win in the 200 IM, and he added a first in the 100 back in 56.74. Sheffer won the diving event with 223.4 points.
Crowder joined with Steve Westcott, Adam Mayer and Taylor Henricks to nail a CCS qualifying time in the 400 free relay in 3:34.46, but it won just second in the meet.
Sophomore Chris Lee was second in the 100 breast in a CCS qualifying time of 1:06.18.
Westcott was second in the 200 free in 2:00.40; Brett Bertocci was fourth in the 200 IM in 2:45.40; Brett Bannon was fourth in the 50 free in 23.48 and second in the 100 free in 54.51, with Henricks fourth in 56.31; Richard Comeau was third in the 100 fly in 1:02.95 with Mayer fourth in 1:04.04; Philip Roan was second in the 500 free in 5:15.81 and third in the 100 breast in 1:07.95; and Jesse Clark was third in diving with 149.05 points.
Divers qualify
Three Los Gatos divers, two of them members of the high school squad and a third who attends Fisher Middle School, have qualified for the 1999 Western Junior National Championships to be held April 24-25 in St. Louis, Mo.
The three each finished among the top placers at the regional qualifier held March 20-21 in Portland, Ore.
Nathan Sheffer, 15, was fourth in the 1-meter springboard and fifth on the 3-meter board; Sara Clark, 14, finished third in the 3-meter springboard; and Katie Lampe, 12, nailed a fifth in the 1-meter and a sixth in the 3-meter event.
Clark, a freshman, and Sheffer, a sophomore, both compete for the Los Gatos swimming and diving team. Lampe is a seventh grader at Fisher. All three compete for the Santa Clara Divers at the International Swim Center in Santa Clara.
