Body of transient found in truck

    By Michelle Alaimo

A tow truck driver made a grisly discovery on March 23 after the door to a camper shell on a pickup truck he was towing came open on Highway 17.

Inside the abandoned truck was the body of Bill Whelan, 49, a transient known by many in the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department for parking his truck around Los Gatos, Sgt. Michael Barbieri said.

Whelan's truck had appeared to be abandoned for three days on University Avenue and was towed for being in violation of the town's abandoned vehicle ordinance, Barbieri said. An officer conducted a vehicle inspection and found the camper to be locked. Because the windows were covered by curtains, the officer could not complete an inventory of the truck section. Barbieri said nothing seemed unusual with the truck or camper and it was ordered to be towed.

The frame of the camper twisted when it was raised on to the tow truck. The twisting action caused the door to pop open while the tow-truck driver was en route to the tow yard.

Upon discovery of Whelan's body, the paramedics were called and they pronounced him dead. A representative with the Santa Clara County Coroner's office said Whelan died from hepatic failure (failure of the liver). The coroner's office would not disclose how long Whelan had been dead before his body was found.
