Town garage sale returns in wake of great reviews
By Jeff Kearns
After last year's first town-wide garage sale proved a success, it's coming back for an encore this year, and may become an annual excuse to rummage.
More than 150 households participated in last year's sale, and "the overwhelming response was just immensely positive," Community Services Director Regina Falkner said.
But unlike last year, this year's sale will also be open to Monte Sereno residents. Residents of unincorporated areas in and around the town are also eligible to be part of the sale, which is set for Saturday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Once residents sign up to participate, the Community Services department will create a map listing the addresses of the sales and what's available at each one.
The goal of the program is to cut down on waste going to landfills and give neighbors an opportunity to get out and meet one another while making a quick buck. And whatever's left at the end of the day can be picked up by a local charity.
Hope Rehabilitation Services, a San Jose-based nonprofit agency serving the mentally disabled, operates a scavenging service. When the sales are over, Hope trucks will be on hand to haul off leftovers residents don't want to drag back into the garage. Hope made 135 pickups last year. It provides the service to the town for free.
Cupertino, Sunnyvale and Gilroy have similar annual programs.
Registration forms are available in the Town Clerk's office, the library, the Neighborhood Center, Whole Foods, Safeway, Lunardis, Nob Hill, Diddams, 7-Eleven stores and the Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company.
Participants will receive a packet that includes tips on how to have a successful garage sale. Forms may also be requested by calling 354-6820.
