    Off and running

It's spring, and runners will have some choices if they want to get off and running in weekend events scheduled throughout the area.

The Artichoke Half Marathon 10K run will begin at 9 a.m. on April 11 at Duarte's Tavern in Pescadero. The cost is $20 on race day, or $15 in advance. Every runner receives an artichoke. For information, call 1-510-223-5778.

The same day, the Heals for Meals event, a 10K with a 5K run/walk, will begin at Shoreline Park in Mountain View. Proceeds benefit the Community Services Agency of Mountain View. For more information, call 1-650-960-1711.

The Dream Run/Sleep Walk, a 5K, will be held on April 17, 10 a.m., at West Valley Community College in Saratoga. The cost is $15. For more information, call 741-4041.

The Challenge For Charity, a 5K and 10K event, will be held on April 18, 8:30 a.m., at Stanford in Palo Alto. The cost is $15 before April 10, or $20 after that. Proceeds benefit Special Olympics. For more information, call 1-650-947-0979.

    Diamond Skills

A free Diamond Skills competition for boys and girls ages 7-14 will be held April 18, 2-5 p.m., at San Jose PAL Stadium. For more information, call Laura Hardy at 277-5556.

    Football Signups

It's time to start thinking about the fall Pop Warner Football season, and youngsters ages 8-15 living in Los Gatos, Saratoga and Campbell can sign up as either football players or cheerleaders.

Players must have been born between Aug. 1, 1983, and July 31, 1991, and 15-year-old players must be under 125 pounds.

Coaches for football and cheerleading are also needed.

For more information, e-mail MA48@prodigy.net or call 270-1443.
