Big win for Los Gatos volleyball
By Dick Sparrer
They may have played on April 1, but this was no April Fool's joke--the Los Gatos boys volleyball team came up with its biggest win of the season, knocking off unbeaten Homestead in five games.
The Wildcats, who had handled Del Mar in three games earlier in the week, pulled out a thrilling 15-8, 4-15, 15-9, 13-15, 15-10 win over the Mustangs.
The Gatos victory left the Cats and Mustangs tied for first place in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League with matching 8-1 records.
Gatos had opened the week with an easy 15-6, 15-10, 15-6 victory over winless Del Mar.
The Wildcats will host Fremont on April 6, 6:30 p.m., before taking a little time off for spring break.
Golfers win two
Freshman Trevor Branon fired a three-over par 38 to lead the Los Gatos golf team to a 224-248 nonleague victory over Fremont last week at the Sunnyvale Golf Course.
The Wildcats, who had beaten Cupertino 208-232 earlier in the week at LaRinconada, are now 6-1 in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Branon was the only Gatos golfer to break 40 in the win. Chris McMorrow and Eric Cassell each fired 45, Brian Cope finished at 47, and Mike Dixon shot a 49.
Michael Bayne finished with a five-over 39 to lead the Wildcats to the win over the Pioneers earlier in the week. Branon shot a 40, Marcia Wallis carded a 42, Eric Hansen finished at 43 and McMorrow fired a 44.
Cats win 4-3-- twice
Brandon Rockwell won twice at No. 1 singles to lead the Los Gatos boys tennis team to back-to-back 4-3 victories over Cupertino and Santa Clara in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL last week.
Rockwell pulled out a tough 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 win at No. 1 to start the Cats on the road to the 4-3 win over the Pioneers.
Kevin Pilger won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, Vincent Lok and Chris Choi teamed for a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles, and Luke Felix and Steven Falkenhagen combined for a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Rockwell came back with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1, and Pilger won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 to lead the Cats to the 4-3 win over Santa Clara.
The Wildcats are now 5-3 in division play and 6-5 for the year.
Sheffer qualifies
Nathan Sheffer has joined the list of Los Gatos swimmers and divers who have qualified for the Central Coast Section meet. Sheffer, a diver, recorded 223.4 points in his first-place showing in a dual meet against Los Altos.
