Los Gatos Weekly-TimesThe ProwlerApril Fool's Day came and went and, as predicted, the Prowler played a few jokes but fell prey to none. Art is no joke to the students at Los Gatos High School, especially those participating in High School Art for 1998, this year's installment of an annual collaboration between the school and the Los Gatos Museum Association, which runs the Los Gatos Museum of Art and Natural Science--a.k.a. the Tait Museum. This show always has lots of cool and innovative artwork, with something for every taste. Art students, from beginning to advanced placement, craft their works in pen and ink, pencil, scratch-board, various types of paints, ceramics and mixed media. Their instructors are art teacher and art department chairman Scott Downs and ceramics teacher Raphael Aguayo. Among this cat's favorite projects are Art I students' color wheels; Art II students' watercolors of trees, landscapes and still lifes; and Art III students' renditions of one object portrayed in six different media. How about a project next year featuring felines? The Prowler would look mighty fine as a cat cast in shiny bronze or distinguished pewter, don't you think? Included in the exhibit are samples of the "Famous Pictures" project that Downs assigns his advanced students. Students pick a well-known artist to research, then copy as closely as possible an oil painting by that artist. Finally, they turn in a two-page report on the artist and the painting. The exhibit runs now through April 25 and is a good chance to notice some great local up-and-coming artists. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
