Hennessy among Top 8 stars
Athletes post top marks,
but Top 8 records remain
By Dick Sparrer
Carl Montgomery can breathe another deep sigh of relief. The record Montgomery set in the 100 meters at the first Central Coast Section Top 8 Track Classic back in 1980 has survived yet another challenge.
Montgomery set the mark when he ran 10.4 in the first Top 8 meet, and though the record was tied by Tony Miller of Riordan in 1986, it had never been bettered heading into the 20th running of Top 8 Classic at Los Gatos last Friday night.
And once again Montgomery's mark withstands the test of time.
Not only was the boys 100-meter record not broken at the prestigious meet last Friday, it wasn't even threatened. And that was the case for almost all of the meet records as the CCS closes the books on the first 20 years of the Top 8 meet.
Still, even if the records were not falling, there were some outstanding performances when the best track and field athletes in the section got together at Los Gatos last week.
"There were a lot of state top 10 marks," admitted meet director, and Los Gatos coach, Willie Harmatz.
Hennessy takes first
Heather Hennessy led Los Gatos to a team sixth in the girls varsity division with a win in the 800 meters.
Hennessy covered the two laps in 2:18.95 to finish first overall, with freshman Michelle Beritzhoff of Gatos sixth in 2:22.93.
The two later teamed with Amy LaPine and Aly Chavez to finish third in the 1,600-meter relay in 4:04.07. LaPine had a 59.1 leg, and Hennessy anchored in a blistering 58.6.
"She had a really good day," said Harmatz of Hennessy.
Emily King came through with a fourth in the long jump at 16-412, and Annie Farnady was sixth in the discus at 112-7.
Chavez came through with an eighth in the 400 meters in 61.64, and Sarah McAleer was seventh in both the 1,600 meters in 5:25.7 and the 3,200 meters in 11:45.1. Cristin McClenathan was ninth in the long jump at 14-234.
Zack Regner was the lone Los Gatos placer in the boys varsity division. The senior distance star finished 10th in the 1,600 meters in 4:28.5.
Martin wins two
But Los Gatos filled the victory stand with placers in the boys frosh-soph division, and it was double-winner Russ Martin leading the Wildcats to a team third.
Martin raced to a win in the 1,600 meters in 4:28, with teammate Matt Bates fifth in 4:36, and Martin came back with a first in the 3,200 meters in 9:47.5, with teammate Tomas Viramontes eighth in 10:13.6.
Eric Medeffor was near winner for the Cats, finishing second in the high jump at 5-10.
Seung Lee supported with a third in the 65-meter high hurdles in 9.44 and was also seventh in the 100 in 11.72.
Nick Skrabe also had a big day for the Wildcats. Skrabe was fourth in both the shot put at 50-712 and the discus at 127-5.
Jeff Hoeft was a solid fourth in the 800 meters in 2:00.54, with Bates sixth in 2:04.29.
The quartet of Bates, Hoeft, John Webb and Darren Key finished fifth in the 1,600-meter relay in 3:35.23. Hoeft ran a swift anchor leg in 51.9.
Los Gatos girls win
The Los Gatos girls ran to an 82-37 win over Los Altos in dual meet action last week. The Gatos boys dropped a 79-48 varsity decision to the Eagles.
Freshman Racine Lewin was a double-winner in the hurdles, winning the 300 lows in 49.7 and the 100 lows in 17.7, and Farnady was first in the weights, taking the shot at 33-10 and the discus at 117-5.
King soared to a win in the long jump at

Rachelle Townsend (100), Heather Davis (shot put), Kate Leary (800), Mel Lopes (300 hurdles) and Lyndsay Erickson (long jump) were other JV winners.
