Van Meter School celebrates 50 years
Students, teachers and others with ties to Louise Van Meter School gathered May 7 to mark its 50th anniversary. Youngsters, including the first-graders above, participated in skits and songs; shared in a brief history of the school; and read headlines from a 1949 newspaper. The opening of a new $35,000 playground built with funds from the Home and School Club and the Los Gatos Recreation Department highlighted the early-morning festivities. The school was named for Louise Van Meter, a Los Gatos teacher who started the community's first kindergarten in 1917.
