    Winners named in writing competition

Among the winners of the 14th annual Young Writers Competition at Villa Montalvo were several local high school students. All 12 winners--selected from 82 poetry and prose entries from students in 14 Santa Clara County high schools--received awards at a public reading and awards ceremony on April 11.

Entries were judged by a panel of published writers from the Bay Area. First-place winner in the poetry competition was Kathy Bernstam of Gunn High School for September 1998; second-place winner was David Hembry of Los Gatos High School for an untitled poem; Cynthia Houng of Mountain View High School took third place for Little Alien. Honorable mentions went to Eva Steele-Saccio of Palo Alto High School, Brian Enriquez of Bellarmine College Preparatory and Diana Lo of Gunn High School.

First-place winner in the prose category was Tanya Cheng of Gunn High School for Nine Lives; second place went to Jennifer Cheng of Saratoga High School for And One For Me; and David Clarke of Bellarmine College Preparatory earned third place for The Edge. Honorable mentions went to Yaamini Lalitha Rao of Gunn High School and to Mark Hsu and Eric Shan, both of Saratoga High School.

The Villa Montalvo Young Writers' Competition, in poetry and prose, takes place each year with the support from the Phelan Trust of the Community Foundation of Santa Clara County.
