The Prowler
The Prowler is a firm believer in the salubrious effects of animals interacting with folks suffering from physical, mental or emotional problems. One of this cat's favorite local nonprofits dedicated to this cause is the San Jose-based Furry Friends: Pet Assisted Therapy Services.
The organization arranges for humans and their pet dogs, cats, rabbits or other critters to visit nursing homes, retirement homes, psychiatric facilities, hospital rehabilitation wards, children's hospitals and shelters. Among the Los Gatos sites served are Cedar Creek Alzheimer's & Dementia Care Center, Eastfield Ming Quong, Los Gatos Meadows and the skilled nursing unit at Mission Oaks Hospital.
The reason the Prowler is promoting Furry Friends at the moment is because the group is holding a dog walk-a-thon fundraiser on May 19 at 10 a.m., beginning at the Los Gatos Creek Trail Park in our neighboring Campbell. Money is raised through the pledges walkers solicit before the event. To learn more, call 408.629.3304 or visit www.furryfriends.org.
Speaking of good causes, Live Oak Adult Day Services, whose four South Bay senior centers include one at 111 Church St. in Los Gatos, is also having a fundraiser. On May 17, the nonprofit organization is holding a casino night at its administrative headquarters, located at 1147 Minnesota Ave. in San Jose, site of the Clark House, a historic landmark.
The event runs 7-11 p.m. and features gambling, a silent auction, hors d'oeuvres, desserts and beverages. Admission is $75 per person, which includes $500 worth of "funny money." Reservations are needed ASAP; call 408.971.9363.
