A Place of Discovery

Although their colorful new logos depict a dress, a chair and a teacup, the Discovery Shops of the American Cancer Society are definitely not limited either in the quantity or quality of items carried.

"A lot of times, the general consensus is that we're a thrift shop, but we are not. We try to have our stores in upscale areas," says Joscelyn Allen, manager of the Discovery Shop that opened May 10 in Los Gatos. "We have something for everybody, and it's all really good quality. It has to be in good shape because we don't do repairs."

Among the most commonly donated items are "gently used" clothing--most of it women's, but men's and children's is also available--furniture, glassware, earthenware, collectibles, jewelry and antiques.

Allen's store adds to that list an upright piano, a large, marble-topped dining table, books and a collection of vintage records.

"The biggest need is for volunteers and donations of merchandise. Almost everything here is donated. As it goes out the front door, there should be enough in the back to replace it," says Allen, explaining the importance not only of consistent donations but of volunteers to staff the shop.

According to Allen, many volunteers at Discovery Shops have had cancer themselves or know someone with the disease, making their service all the more meaningful. Aside from money for rent and utilities, all profits benefit the American Cancer Society.

The Discovery Shop is located at 39 E. Main St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. 354-5917.
