Recycling slogans and posters win

Green Valley on May 8 announced 10 adult and student winners, including two Los Gatans, for its recycling poster and slogan contest.

Elie Berkowitz earned a laser printer for Yavneh Day School by drawing a poster judges deemed the best.

Yui Ashikaga, of Louise Van Meter Elementary School, was honored for a poster as well.

Others, including Elias Ray of Monte Sereno, penned clever slogans such as, "If you put it in the bins, everybody WINS."

The 10 contest winners received either a season pass to Great America, a season pass to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk or a $50 gift certificate from a local merchant.

Los Gatos High School senior Stephanie Burniece won a $500 U.S. savings bond in a grand prize drawing that included all entrants.

Town planner Don Ross retires

After 27 years as a town planner, Don Ross will celebrate his retirement June 13 with a picnic dinner at Oak Meadow Park. The event begins at 5:15 p.m and all friends, family and associates are invited.

Station weathered half century

The Central Fire District's station on Shannon Road is also a weather station. It will collect a service award from the National Weather Service on May 15 for collecting atmospheric data the past 50 years. The fire station provides information to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Firefighter Daniel Williams, the lead weather-reporting person for 35 years, will accept the award and will be honored for his services as well.

The ceremony is set for 10:30 a.m. at the fire station, 16565 Shannon Road. Fire Chief Douglas Sporleder is expected to attend.
