Ellen Wilson
Ellen Kattwinkel Wilson, a longtime Los Gatan, died of cancer May 12 at the age of 65.
Born May 14, 1933, in West Newton, Mass., Wilson was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. While her husband was serving in the U.S. Navy, Wilson taught English to junior high and high school students in various places, including her own Newton High School and her husband's Berkeley High School.
She later spent 21 years on the English department faculty at Los Gatos High School. To teach creative writing, she developed a technique of writing from "models"--students emulating the patterns of successful writers, thereby getting hands-on practice in using those same styles. She also introduced the practice of peer evaluation.
Wilson was a member of the board of directors of the Alumnae Association of Mount Holyoke College, where she had once served as a volunteer admissions interviewer and regional coordinator of admissions. In 1989, she received the Alumnae Medal of Honor.
Survivors include husband of 43 years Stephen A. Wilson of Los Gatos; sons Scott Wilson of Aptos and Michael Wilson of Santa Cruz; daughter Martha Wilson of Los Gatos; five grandchildren; brothers Norman Kattwinkel of Massachusetts and John Kattwinkel of Virginia; and an aunt, uncle and other relatives.
Memorial services will be held on May 22 at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Los Gatos, 19 High School Court. Friends, former students and colleagues are invited.
Donations may be made to the Ellen Kattwinkel Wilson Financial Aid Fund, Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass. 01075, or to Skyland Community Church, 25100 Skyland Road, Los Gatos, 95033.
