The voting committee said Nyquist, currently a resident of Greenville, N.C., "pushed the technical aspect of dirt jumping farther than anyone in the 2001 season. He is an all- around great rider and won the 2001 X Games silver medal in dirt jumping as well as the Bike Stunt Series' coveted belt for 2001 in Park."
Awards were to be presented in 17 categories, highlighted by the athlete of the year in nine categories from six action sports--BMX, skateboarding, motorcross, surfing, skiing and snowboarding. The ESPN Action Sports and Music Awards also acknowledged six musical artists for each of the sports categories.
Nyquist took second place at the B3 Anaheim and B3 Louisville, then won gold in street at the Gravity Games.
