San Jose resident John Charles Laffey, 29, died shortly before 7 p.m. May 2 when his motorcycle crashed into a tree on University Avenue near Vasona Dam. No one else was involved in the crash, police said.
"It appears speed was the cause," Los Gatos Police Capt. Jeff Miller said of the accident. Miller added there were no indications of alcohol or drugs involved in the crash and that Laffey was wearing a helmet.
At least one passing motorist attempted to revive Laffey using CPR, Miller said. The resuscitation was unsuccessful, and Laffey was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the county coroner's office, Laffey died of multiple traumatic injuries.
A carpenter with Klepinger Construction, Laffey was single and was a lifelong resident of Santa Clara Valley.
