Long drive contest
The Pin High Golf Center in San Jose will host the Re/Max North American Long Drive contest on June 8, 10 a.m. Contestants will compete for the right to advance to the district semifinals. For more information, call 934-1111.
Souther cards an 89
Hamilton Souther of Los Gatos fired an 89 on the par-72 Rancho Cañada West golf course in the Central Coast Section golf championships held last week.
Ginn all-conference
Former Leigh baseball star David Ginn played well enough for Cuesta Community College of San Luis Obispo to earn a berth on the all-Western State Conference team.
Ginn, a former all-leaguer and all-county player at Leigh, was selected as an all-conference first team pitcher.
The sophomore right-hander posted a 7-3 record for the Cougars with a school record-setting 2.53 earned run average. He struck out 42 in 78-plus innings.
Ginn was also selected as the Cuesta pitcher of the year.
Vikings win honors
Softball and baseball players from West Valley Community College walked off with top honors after outstanding spring seasons on the diamond.
Chantiel McDonnell was named the California player of the year after an excellent year for the Vikings. McDonnell hit .542 and stole 79 bases for the Vikes this spring.
Top hurler Jennifer Mallon was named to the all-state team. Kim Lax and Jennifer Ellinger were tabbed to the all-Northern California squad.
J.R. Ziegelmann and Ryan Becks of West Valley were named to the all-conference baseball team in the South Division of the Coast Conference.
