No doubt about it, married couple is married

    By Mary Ann Cook

DOUBLY MARRIED: Nathe Martin, 1989 Los Gatos High School grad, made sure he was really married. He and his bride, Nicole Kietz of Germany were married twice--once in Germany in a civil ceremony and once here at the First Unitarian Church of San Jose.

Martin was an army sergeant at the time, stationed in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, but he was discharged just before members of his company were sent to Macedonia. Which must be a relief to his parents, Mary and Gene Martin.

The German ceremony required the bridal couple to saw a log in two before attending their own reception. Evidently if you can jointly saw a log in two you can work cooperatively for a lifetime. The reception was held at a home and a nearby pub and lasted all afternoon. Seven cakes were served, and the official one was topped with a bride and groom standing on a canister which, when opened, revealed two tiny plastic babies. Another local tradition: the bride was missing at midnight and the groom had to find her with the help of male friends and relatives while carrying the bridal bouquet.

However, she was found fairly speedily at her favorite dance club. The couple will move to Columbia, Mo., this fall where the bridegroom will finish his bachelor's degree.

MEZZO SOPRANO: Emily Stern plays the mezzo soprano lead in the West Bay Opera production of The Consul by Gian Carlo Menotti. Stern will appear in three performances--May 29, and June 4 at 8:15 p.m.; and June 6 at 2 p.m.--at Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto. The box office number is (650) 424-9999.

The production is double-cast and performed in English. Stern is a 1989 LGHS grad, has a double major in fine arts and art history frin Oberlin University and studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

She is now studying with former Metropolitan Opera singer Blanche Thebom. Her grandmother sang opera in Minneapolis, though not professionally, reports Emily's mother, Elle Stern. Elle played timpani and percussion with the Santa Clara University orchestra for several years.

SURPRISE!: Diane Ogilvie's children, Terrie Christiansen and Doug Ogilvie, surprised their maternal unit with a barbecue picnic at Vasona Park to commemorate her 80th birthday one recent Sunday. So overwhelmed was the honoree that she fell off the bike she was riding and collapsed, in tears, on the side of Winchester Road.

She had just realized that all those people waving and shouting at either side of the street were cheering for her. "She didn't have a clue," Christiansen said. Husband Bruce had masterminded the path of the bike ride. A new red racing bike was the major gift for the octogenarian, who shows no signs of slowing down just because she's reached a higher decade.

Some 60 people attended the doings, including her five granddaughters, plus town dignitaries. All on hand to fete the owner of The Cats and Pigalle restaurants. Chris Hickey and Paige Boger of The Cats handled the barbecue with aplomb.

POWERPEDE: Women's Aggie Reebok centipede runners won their event and set a new record in the Bay to Breakers, shaving 30 seconds off a record that had held for 10 years. Local members include Jackie McCleary, Julie Rohloff, Louise Kobin and Tenaya Soderman of Los Gatos; and Liz Nast of Saratoga. The centipede runners are sponsored by Reebok and PowerBar. Centipedes run single file under a sheet with 13 heads exposed at 4-foot intervals.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN: A campaign to raise money to revitalize the West Valley College theater kicked off with a $250,000 challenge grant from the Packard Foundation. Members of the campaign committee are Mike Fox Sr., Linda and Robert Bryan, Lon Allan, Sally Allen, and Marchelle Fox.

Mike and Mary Ellen Fox hosted a gala at their Saratoga home for donors of $500 or more. Dinner was catered by Mission College Hospitality Management students, and entertainment was by West Valley music and theater students. Curtains, seats, rugs and lights will be replaced once the college matches the challenge grant.

SAFE RETURN: Here's a finder who was not a keeper, except of her own integrity. Mary Kairis of Travel Advisors of Los Gatos found wedding and engagement rings in the parking lot near Virtual Gallery. When she asked around nearby businesses, she hit paydirt with Deanna Barbi of Virtual Gallery, who had been missing the rings for several days and who was overjoyed at their safe return. Barbi sent Kairis a bounteous bouquet of flowers, and now here's a bouquet of words for her.

NOW'S THE TIME: At Pageant Way behind town hall the rhododendrons are in bloom and quite a spectacle. That oasis is the town's best kept secret, declares Marge Rice, whose husband Rob is a park commissioner.

It's an area that's little used, but would be a good place for a wedding, Marge adds, despite noise from generators close by. Ever hear a Frenchman say rhododendron? You could circumnavigate the shrubs there--about 100--in the time it takes all the nasal nuances to be rendered French style.
