The Prowler
Being a primarily outdoor cat, the Prowler was very excited--but of course hid under the feline façade of coolness--upon hearing that the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department is holding Go Outside and Play Day on June 3. In celebration of the imminent beginning of summer (i.e., park season), the department is waiving all vehicle entry fees in its 28 parks. Among these are Lexington Reservoir, Los Gatos Creek and Vasona Lake in Los Gatos and Sanborn-Skyline and Villa Montalvo in nearby Saratoga.
The Prowler was also surprised to learn our county's parks comprise more than 40,000 acres of diverse lands, with activities for every taste and temperament. This includes hiking, camping, biking, boating, picnicking, trap and skeet shooting, horseback and motorcycle riding, interpretive nature centers, or even just good old playground equipment! For more information about county parks, call 408.358.3741 or visit www.parkhere.org on the Internet.
Speaking of outdoor fun, this cat's canine friends are all a-twitter about the 14th annual Walk-A-Dog-A-Thon coming up on June 10, at Vasona Lake County Park. The event, which begins at 8:30 a.m., is a fundraiser for the Lions Silicon Valley Center for the Blind, a nonprofit outfit that provides educational, social and recreational activities for people who are blind or who have low vision. Among the area Lions clubs supporting this cause is our own Los Gatos Lions Club.
Registration is $10 in advance, or $15 on the day of the walk, which consists of a 5K or 10K route. Although the idea is to bring Rover along, walkers without furry friends are welcome. Call 408.295.4016 for details.
