Youth Citizen competition opens

Benefit for Albanian refugees includes the rock band dredg

Dredg, a Bay Area rock band made up of Los Gatos High School alumni, headlines a benefit event for Albanian refugees on June 5 from noon to 5 p.m. on the front lawn of Los Gatos High School.

According to LGHS student body president Francesca Dorris, the event is a result of a Student Council brainstorming session on what the community could do for Kosovo.

"We felt the biggest and best thing we could do would be giving help and support to the refugees who have been kicked out of their homes and their land," she explains. "Someone came up with the idea of having a benefit concert on the front lawn of the high school and having local bands play and local restaurants donate food."

Cutting through red tape in record time, the students got the event together and now offer all members of the community an entertaining afternoon for a good cause. Several local restaurants have donated food for students to sell, with proceeds going to Albanian relief efforts. Face-painting and a balloon artist will appeal to children, while the Comedy Sportz team will keep teenagers and adults laughing with their fast-paced stand-up routines.

Among the bands recruited for the concert is dredg, whose members--Dino Campanella, Mark Engles, Gavin Hayes and Drew Roulette--have been rocking their way to fame since the band formed in January 1996. At the time, some of the members were still finishing high school. The band has since played numerous Bay Area gigs, including in San Jose's Cactus Club and as part of the annual downtown San Jose SoFA Street Fair. They've also just released a new album, titled Leitmotif.
