Controlled burn in Sierra Azul set for Friday

Don't jump up on the roof with a hose when the hills start burning Friday.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District and the Santa Clara County Fire Department will be conducting a controlled burn June 4 in the Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve southeast of the town.

Smoke will be visible from around the South Bay, but the district and the department say there's no cause for alarm.

Officials plan to burn up to nine acres of grassland and sparse chaparral in an inaccessible area on the eastern end of the park, near Hicks Road.

The burn doubles as a training exercise for new firefighters in the county fire department, and other new firefighters from other jurisdictions.

    Ogilvie hotel gets final OK

Planning commissioners gave a final approval for Diane Ogilvie's hotel at 220 E. Main St. May 26, but saddled the project with a laundry list of conditions on architectural details.

And to make sure the project doesn't turn into another Old Town quagmire, they told the Architectural Standards Committee to monitor the buildings as they start to take shape and to make sure that the conditions are followed.

The project, which was continued at the commission's April 28 meeting, was on the consent calendar last week, but commissioner Jim Lyon pulled it for discussion.

Except for a building permit, this is the last approval Ogilvie needs to demolish the cleaners and two restaurants on the site and build the hotel she's been working on for almost eight years--that is, unless the commission's decision is appealed to the Town Council.
