Summer Internet classes planned for teachers
The Santa Clara County Office of Education this summer will offer teachers summer instruction on putting the power of the Internet to work in classrooms.
The Internet institute will offer Kindergarten through 12th grade teachers eight days of instruction along with follow-up sessions during the upcoming school year. Participants will learn to integrate the Internet and the newly adopted California Content Standards into their classrooms.
Training will take place at 25 separate sites in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, San Benito, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties.
Three eight-day sessions will be offered: July 6-15; July 20-29 and August 3-12. Follow-up sessions will be offered in November and February.
Deadline for registration is June 1. For additional information, contact Judy Powers, 453-6523 or Gene Agee, 453-6763
Service academy nominations due
U.S. Rep. Tom Campbell (R-San Jose) has announced that starting this month he will accept applications for nominations to the United States Service Academies: Air Force Academy, Military Academy and Naval Academy for the Class of 2004.
Applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 22 by July 1 of 2000, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the 15th Congressional District. Applicants also must have completed all California high school requirements or the equivalent by the end of the next academic year (June 2000), with high academic standing. They also should show leadership potential as demonstrated through extracurricular, athletic or community service activities.
Applications will be accepted until November 1. For more information, contact Campbell's district office, 371-7337.
Student named to Dean's list
Jeanne Fishback, a 1997 Los Gatos High School graduate, was recently named to the Dean's List at the University of California at Davis, where she is majoring in music.
School alternatives available at WVC
Students unhappy with the high school social scene have the opportunity to get off campus while completing their required courses, thanks to West Valley College's "Middle College" program.
Students are recommended for the program by teachers, counselors or principals and must complete an interview and application process. Those accepted in the program spend half their school day covering regular high school curriculum at West Valley College and the remainder taking college courses of their choice.
For more information about the program, contact Joseph Samuels, 741-2052.
