    The Prowler

Although not the type to catch and eat birds, the Prowler nonetheless is attracted by their flighty antics and their lilting songs.

Speaking of this popular pastime, the Wild Bird Center in the Kings Court Shopping Center has a bunch of classes on birds and other critters geared just for children. Collectively called R.T. Chickadee's Backyard Ranger's Club, the Tuesday morning series consists of 10 classes from June to August. Kids get a sticker for each class and can trade them in at summer's end for a prize.

The first class, Monarchs on the Move, is on June 15. Held at Belgatos Park, it teaches kids about monarch butterflies with a puppet show, games and crafts. Future classes deal with topics such as bird-watching, insect life, animal tracking, hummingbirds and birds of prey. A small fee is charged for each class. Age or space restrictions may apply. For all the particulars, call 358-9453.

For outdoor aficionados who don't mind getting dirty and sweaty, June 5 offers the opportunity to observe National Trails Day in a very local way--volunteer work in Castle Rock State Park. The park, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains and accessed through Saratoga on Highway 9, needs restoration of its overused Castle Rock Trail.

Coordinated by Any Mountain outdoor stores and the Bay Area's non-profit Trail Center, the project begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends around 3 p.m. Tools and training are provided, and all volunteers get free gift bags and lunch. The first 50 sign-ups also get free T-shirts. Great exercise and a great cause! For more info, call (415) 927-2400 ext. 339 or visit www.trailcenter.org on the Internet.
