County considers domestic partners

Gay and lesbian partners as well as heterosexual couples who live together may soon be able to register their relationships with the Santa Clara County recorder.

The county Board of Supervisors is expected to approve the controversial policy Aug.13. If it passes, the proposal will allow live-in couples to file an agreement that they will share living expenses and care for one another and any children they may have.

Introduced by Supervisor Mike Honda, the policy has drawn fire from Christian groups, which say it will weaken traditional families and marriages. Registrants wouldn't receive benefits enjoyed by married couples, including tax deductions and certain legal rights.

The county Human Relations Commission supported the proposal at a May 28 meeting. A public hearing is scheduled for the Aug. 13 supervisors' meeting.

Parking plan discussed

The Los Gatos Parking Commission will discuss the downtown parking plan at its June 6 meeting.

The proposed plan calls for building a new parking garage downtown and charging shoppers and downtown employees to park at all the town-owned lots south of Highway 9.

LGHS graduation scheduled June 14

Another crop of graduates will get a handshake and a diploma June 14 at Los Gatos High School.

The ceremony starts at 5 p.m. on the front lawn of the high school and ends at 8 p.m.

Main Street will be closed between Pleasant Street and Fiesta Way during the event.

An all-night graduation party will follow the ceremony. The event will be held from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. at the Los Gatos High School gyms. Two police officers and six of the town's DART volunteers will join parents and others to chaperone the event.
