Plenty of sports camps for kids, from baseball to ice hockey

Santa Clara University baseball coaches Mike Cummins and Lou Lucas will host the annual Santa Clara Baseball School on the college campus this summer.

The school features three sessions with instruction in basic fundamentals, hitting and pitching.

The first two sessions (June 24-28 and July 8-12) will offer classes in basic fundamentals and hitting from 9 a.m. to noon (the cost $100), and classes in pitching only from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. ($50).

The third session (July 22-26) covers hitting only in two separate classes, 9 to 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. ($50 per class).

The school features individualized instruction in the basic fundamentals of hitting, sliding, base running and playing defense. Each player will receive a camp T-shirt, a written evaluation and video analysis.

Camp With The Pros

South Bay Baseball returns for the fifth year with its annual Camp With The Pros this summer at the old Blackford High School campus and at John Muir Middle School.

The baseball skills camps are open to players ages 7-15 and feature sessions at Blackford on June 24-28 and July 22-26 and at John Muir on July 8-12 and Aug. 5-9.

The cost is $99 per player per week and family and multiple camp rates are available.

Camps feature individualized and group instruction in all fundamentals. Each camper receives a
T-shirt, and there will be instructional scrimmages each day. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily.

Former major league pitcher Roger Samuels serves as camp director. Samuels was a pitcher with the San Francisco Giants and Pittsurgh Pirates. He played locally at Branham High School.

Former professional infielder Mark Cummins, now the head coach at Live Oak High School, will serve as director of instruction.

West Valley Baseball School

The West Valley Baseball School returns to West Valley Community College in Saratoga this summer.

The camp features instruction in the fundamentals of baseball by West Valley head coach Mike Perez and his Viking staff.

Camps are slated for June 17-20 (ages 7-9), June 24-27 (ages 10-12) and July 8-11 (ages 13-15). Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Wildcat Wrestling Camp

The annual Wildcat Wrestling Camp returns to Los Gatos this summer with two sessions scheduled at the high school.

A session for beginners, ages 7-13, will be held June 17-21, and a session for wrestlers with junior high experience, ages 11-15, is set for June 24-28. Camp hours are 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. each day, and the cost is $100 per week.

The clinic will be operated by former Los Gatos head coach Scott Downs, along with Fisher coach Jeff Garlick and past and present Los Gatos High School wrestlers.

Wildcat Basketball Camp

A summer basketball clinic hosted by Los Gatos boys' varsity basketball coach Jim Marino will be held June 17-June 28 in the Los Gatos gym.

The clinic runs from 9 to 11 a.m. for players ages 7-9 and 11:10 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. for players ages 10-12, and will emphasize fundamentals in shooting, passing, dribbling, defense and team play with daily drills and games.

The registration fee is $90 per player ($150 for two from the same family), and each session is limited to 60 players.

Williams Basketball Camp

The annual Sid Williams Basketball Camp returns to Fisher Middle School July 15-19 with sessions for boys and girls entering the fifth-ninth grades.

Williams, the eighth grade coach at Fisher, will host the camp that features a 1 to 3:30 p.m. session for boys and girls headed to the fifth and sixth grades ($90 per player), and a 4 to 7 p.m. session for boys and girls entering the seventh-ninth grades ($100 per player).

Youth ice hockey

The Santa Clara Valley Hockey Association will hold skills clinics and scrimmages throughout the summer at Iceoplex in Fremont and at the Eastridge Ice Arena.

Ice hockey skills clinics are held Sundays through the end of August at Iceoplex. Mites and squirts are on the ice from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. with the pee wees, bantams and midgets in action from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Hockey scrimmages for mites through midgets are held Saturdays, 7:30 to 9 a.m., at Eastridge and Thursdays, 7:45 to 9 p.m., at Iceoplex.
